You probably know that the Motability Scheme offers cars and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs) to recipients of higher rate DLA or enhanced rate PIP – did you know they also offer wheelchairs?
You can use your mobility allowance to purchase the more expensive wheelchairs if required, with a wide range of wheelchair options including electric and specialised wheelchairs as well as scooters. Many wheelchairs do not use all of your weekly allowance and some have an upfront payment required. The scheme also includes battery insurance, breakdown cover and tyres. The lease is for three years, usually. Often you have the option to buy the wheelchair at the end or under special circumstances, you can extend the lease.
It is important to ensure you undertake a test drive before you buy if possible, making sure that the wheelchair fits your needs and lifestyle. You can arrange this through your local wheelchair dealer. If you can’t find the wheelchair you need, talk to your dealer first as they may be able to identify a solution.
Full information can be found on the Motability Website, including a wheelchair search tool and information about how to apply to the scheme.
